In fact, a significant numbers of Nicaraguans flee into Costa Rica, one of the richest countries in the area. The director based her script on stories she herself experienced or was told in person, which give the film a documentary touch. The camerawork is impressive and sound design is particularly polished.

Apenas pude fui a ver “El camino”. Al día siguiente regresé al cine con alguien más. Regresé porque el día anterior había asistido a un sueño proyectado, había perdido toda noción de la realidad, había caído hipnotizado por la imagen y el sonido de la película, estado ideal para adentrarme en esa región conocida por mí que es Nicaragua y que a través de la mirada de Ishtar vuelvo a soñar.
Es una película muy nicaragüense, retrata de manera fiel lo que Pablo Antonio Cuadra llamó el carácter peregrino del nicaragüense. No en vano la película está dedicada a Nicaragua…

Un trueno suelta su rugido y aviva el líquido de la pantalla: aparece la imagen de un paisaje desgranado por el viento. Hierba seca, trozos de tierra melancólica, cadáveres de lava antigua y el trazo de un camino que los atraviesa, un camino sin final. El rostro de una niña reemplaza la imagen del paisaje: ella mira ese trayecto sin destino, y, visiblemente cansada, cierra los ojos. El espectador se adentra sin remedio en un mundo telúrico. Con esta escena comienza El camino, el primer largometraje de Ishtar Yasin Gutiérrez. Y de esta forma también se introduce al espectador en un universo paradójico, donde el vaivén de las imágenes se balancea desde la cruda realidad centroamericana hasta el subconsciente de los personajes, desde decisiones atroces y pragmáticas hasta emociones primitivas, desde el dolor desnudo hasta la inocencia más tierna.

The film mixes reality with imagination and the past with the present, which is developed through Mexican folklore, surrealism and existentialism. It is not a “feel good movie” in the least bit and the film even forces the audience to contemplate the meaning of life. It is important to note that the name Dos Fridas is a nod towards one of Frida Kahlo’s oil paintings called The Two Fridas, this painting is a double self portrait.

« Nuits noires » de Tallinn (PÖFF), en Estonie, Dos Fridas retrace les liens particuliers entre Frida Kahlo et son infirmière du Costa Rica, Judith Ferreto, qui avait pris soin de l’artiste mexicaine durant les dernières années de sa vie. Le long métrage est basé sur une histoire vraie et constitue une sorte d’hymne à l’Amour. « Un Amour plus fort que la mort », souligne sa réalisatrice costaricienne Ishtar Yasin Gutierrez.
EL UNIVERSAL
1) Si uno quisiera hacer una película sobre la muerte, quizás habría que hacerla en México, seguramente habría que hacer la que concibe Isthar Yasin. Es casi la muerte, es la nostalgia pura... pero nos la da envuelta en una narración de lo más generosa por tan íntima y personal, de lo más viva (a pesar de la muerte). La autora sabe que aunque morimos solos y una única vez, morir puede ser una fiesta... Dos Fridas es un regalo maravilloso. Una película que me cambió la muerte.
2) La película es dirigida por Ishtar Yasin y protagonizada por María de Medeiros; ambas estarán en la Casa Azul durante la exhibición de la película. La directora ha dicho que quiso entrar en el mundo interior de los personajes, revivir sentimientos. Relató que durante el proceso creativo de la película Dos Fridas vivió encuentros con personas que conocieron a Frida Kahlo y a Ferreto.
